SAT Prep: Moving into the Digital Era

How is the SAT Changing in 2024?

Starting in March 2024, the SAT will be moving to a digital format to better meet the needs of modern learners. The exam will undergo several changes aimed at improving its relevance, accessibility, and fairness. The move to digital will include a shorter test (2 hours instead of 3 hours) and faster results. We provided some of the most relevant changes below. For a detailed understanding of all changes, we recommend you visit College Board for more information.

Math:

· The pencil-and-paper exam permits calculator use on only one of two Math sections. The Digital SAT will allow calculators to be used throughout the entire Math section. In fact, a graphing calculator will be incorporated into the exam tools to ensure all students have access.

· The average length of Math word problems will be reduced. Word questions will still play a large role in the exam, but they will not be as long-winded as on the pencil-and-paper version.

Reading and Writing:

· Unlike on the pencil-and-paper test, the Digital SAT will have a combined reading and writing section.

· The pencil-and-paper exam includes long reading passages with roughly ten questions per passage. The Digital SAT will include more but shorter passages, each with just one follow-up question. The Digital SAT will also include new styles of questions (i.e., new prompts, new strategies, etc.).
